DESIGN CHAMPION: CLAIRE HALLERAN

Claire Halleran is a performance designer based in Glasgow. A graduate of Glasgow School of Art and Queen Margaret University and is an associate lecturer with the University of West of Scotland.

Her recent design credits include work for the National Theatre of Scotland, Macrobert Arts Centre, Grid Iron, Heroica Theatre Company, Stellar Quines, Fish & Game, Aberdeen Arts Centre and Showroom. In addition, has also designed for many other companies including Borderline/Hirtle, Ros Sydney, A Moment’s Peace, Grinagog, Cultured Mongrel Dance Theatre, Visible Fictions, Active Inquiry, Strange Town, Smallpetitklein, Eco Drama, Magnetic North and Birds of Paradise.

Claire has designed several film festivals for Tilda Swinton and Mark Cousins and had developed and created many interactive events and workshops for the Edinburgh International Science Festival including more recently Moments in Time and Ecoville on the Mound in Edinburgh.

In 2013 she co-founded The Envelope Room, a network funded by Creative Scotland to support, promote and engage with stage designers in Scotland.

Venue Partner: Dundee Rep

Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre are excited to be the hosting venue, as the Scottish Regional Partner for Staging Places.

The Rep is the rarest of theatres now with a full, permanent, in house production team, including a resident Design Assistant, an acting ensemble, and a contemporary Dance company; creating all we see on stage and more, here, at the Dundee Rep city centre premises.

We support all creative industries in and around Dundee, and are fortunate recipients of many stage design awards.

We are right at the heart of a city, full of innovation, design, research and the home of the new, national Museum of Design – the V&A.


Leila Kalbassi

Leila is the Dundee Rep & Scottish Dance Theatre’s, resident, Design Assistant and Scenic Artist, having trained in Design at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 1996.

Recent Designs include: The Lover, for S.D.T / Stellar Quines / Lyceum Theatre. For Dundee Rep, she has designed: The 39 Steps, Arturo Ui, Spoiling, Midsummer, Talk to Me like the Rain and Let Me Listen, Hecuba , Old Blood for Oran Mor and numerous productions for Rep Engage, including The Blue Road, , Skellig, The Children, Lysistrata and Our Country’s Good.

As a Freelance Designer, Scenic Artist and Scale Model Maker, Leila has worked for Scottish Ballet, National Theatre of Scotland, Perth Theatre, CBBC, Girl Guiding UK, Glasgow Science Centre, Planet Hollywood Restaurants, designed numerous productions for regional Opera.

Leila also leads workshops on Stage Design and Scenic Art for schools, students and with adult CPD groups.


Higher Education partner: Edinburgh College of Art

Megan Baker is the Programme Director for the BA (Hons) and MFA programmes in Performance Costume at Edinburgh College of Art at the University of Edinburgh. The programme teaches Costume Design alongside Costume Making with additional skills in set design, textiles, millinery and drawing providing students with a wide range of skills and a versatility highly respected by the industry. Megan has developed extensive links with stage and screen companies providing students with invaluable work experience and job opportunities, the most recent collaboration being with Edinburgh International festival where students designed and made the costumes for EIF’s 2018 opening ceremony- ‘Five Telegrams’.

A practitioner herself Megan has worked in the industry for over 25 years including London’s west end and the Globe theatre. Her most recent design credits are for ‘ Without a Hitch’, Finland and UK tour ‘The Illiad’ and ‘Union’ at the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, ‘The Guid Sisters’ National theatre of Scotland and ‘Ana’ Imago theatre, Montreal and Stella Quines.
